5 Reasons: Why Neck Pain Is Related To Migraines?

The neck is composed of many vertebrae and other connecting tissues that support the weight and movement of the head. Several factors can lead to neck pain and migraines, including injuries, poor posture, weather changes, whiplash, inflammation, etc.

Below are 5 reasons why neck pain and migraines are linked.

Neck Pain Precedes Migraine. Several studies have shown that sufferers experienced neck pain before their migraines. Researchers have therefore concluded that if neck pain occurred before and during a migraine attack, then there is a strong link between them.

Weather Changes Trigger Neck Pain and Migraine. Changes in the weather can cause the muscles to constrict and tighten, which results in neck pain and migraines.

Migraine and Neck Pain Are Symptoms of Nervous System Disorders. In a recent survey, 89.1% of migraine patients reported that their migraine and neck pain began after they suffered from upper cervical injuries. The injuries had caused disorders in their central nervous system.

Both Neck Pain and Migraine Sufferers Experience Nausea. In some cases, neck pain and migraines cause vomiting, nausea, and photosensitivity

Both Conditions Are Genetic. According to new research, genes determine whether you’ll suffer from chronic neck pain and migraine. One study led by Dr. Jan Hartvigsen, at the University of Southern Denmark, revealed that genetic vulnerability had predisposed most sufferers of back and neck aches to the ailments. Other studies have reported that as many as 90% of migraine sufferers had a family history of migraine and neck pain sufferers.

Migraines, Neck Pain, and Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care.

The connection between some migraines and neck pain is due to the misalignment of the upper cervical vertebrae.

Misalignments can lead to irritation and pressure on the surrounding arteries of the spine leading to migraines. Misalignments can also put a strain on the nerves around the neck resulting in pain.

A growing body of evidence has revealed that upper cervical care can help restore these nerves’ functions.

But before the specific chiropractor administers care, diagnostic tests will be conducted. If any misalignment is diagnosed, the specific chiropractor will administer a chiropractic adjustment and other kinds of care. This will correct the root cause of the neck pain and the migraine. It will also prevent inflammation and boost proper blood flow to other parts of the body.
