Can Chiropractors Relieve Sinus Pain?

Sinusitis is an inflammation of one or more of the sinuses. It usually starts with the same symptoms you feel when you have a cold – blocked, stuffy and runny nose, and of course sinus pain. This condition is very common as it affects millions of people every year.

What is sinus?

A sinus is a hollow, air-filled cavity located in the skull. It is connected to the nasal airway by a narrow hole in the bone called the ostium. There are many of these sinuses located in different parts of the head. The ones in the forehead are referred to as the frontal sinus. Those behind your cheeks are called the maxillary sinus. Situated behind the eyes are the ethmoid sinuses. There are four pairs of these cavities in every human being.

Symptoms of sinusitis

You probably already know that sinusitis symptoms come with a lot of pain. The pain is a result of the inflammation of the sinuses. The infection puts pressure on the sinuses, thereby causing pain to the sufferer. Sinus pain can be felt in any part of the face and head region. For some people, the pain is felt on the forehead. For others, the pain is concentrated on the nose area, between the eyes, and even the upper jaws and teeth.

Because sinusitis has the same symptoms as a cold, it is difficult to determine what a sufferer has. The need for proper diagnosis is therefore key. Common symptoms of sinusitis include but aren’t limited to:

  • Tension, cluster and sinus headaches
  • Migraines
  • Sinus pains
  • Nasal congestion
  • Fever
  • Tooth pain
  • Fatigue
  • Bad breath
  • Postnasal drip

In many cases, sinusitis symptoms usually last for about 3 – 14 days. These symptoms typically disappear on their own, without treatment.

If a sinus infection lasts longer than necessary, please seek professional help. Untreated sinus infections—especially those that affect the rear center of the head—can spread to the brain and lead to more serious conditions.

How To Find Relief For Sinus Pains

As we mentioned earlier, sinus pain is caused by the inflammation of the sinuses. Lasting relief will come only if a trained professional addresses the root cause of the inflammation. Many people resort to temporary remedies such as warm compresses, humidifiers, and nasal decongestants or sprays.

However, chiropractic care has proven to be an effective way to find lasting relief from sinus pain.

How Specific Chiropractors Relieve Sinus Pain.

The sinus membranes are controlled by the facial nerves. Neck injury and other types of upper cervical trauma can interfere with the function of these facial nerves, sinus ligaments, and muscles. An injury in the upper cervical region can lead to misalignment of the top two neck vertebrae. This misalignment often leads to irritation and inflammation in the spine, the brainstem and the nerves controlling the sinus membranes.

Through nerve testing and digital x-ray scans, an upper cervical chiropractor can detect the underlying cause of the sinusitis. If a neck injury is diagnosed, the specific chiropractic will administer specific adjustments and other kinds of care that will help to set off a natural healing process in the body. Addressing neck trauma usually provides relief from sinus pain. It also prevents future occurrence of sinusitis.

Many people prefer chiropractic care because it’s an effective and non-invasive procedure that focuses on restoring nervous system function so as to relieve the pressure on the sinus and to eliminate inflammation in the spinal cord.
