Woman Standing in the middle of the field

What Causes Migraines in Females

The vast majority of migraine sufferers are female. According to the Migraine Research Foundation, 28 million out of the 39 million sufferers of migraine in the United States are women. If you suffer from migraines, you probably often feel intense pains in their head and neck, loss of appetite, fatigue, photosensitivity and nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, thirst, etc.

Trigger and Causes of Migraines in Women

However, the following factors can also trigger migraines in women.

Menstruation. Menstruation causes a drop in women’s estrogen levels before and during menstruation. This hormone regulates the menstrual cycle and controls other parts of the body.

This change affects the brain and triggers migraines.

Pregnancy. Many women suffer migraine attacks, especially in the early stages of their pregnancy, when there is a spike in estrogen levels.

Menopause.  Although estrogen levels generally decline as women age, about 30% of women in menopause experience migraines. However, for some women, the onset of menopause can sometimes cause hormonal fluctuations and imbalances, which can trigger migraines.

The root cause of most cases of migraine is neck trauma. Women who have experienced domestic violence, sports-related injuries, whiplashes, and bad repetitive postures are more likely to experience migraines.

Upper Cervical Care and Migraines

An increasing number of researches are showing that many migraine sufferers found immediate relief after chiropractic care. The upper cervical region is made up of the C1 and C2 neck vertebrae. These neck bones link the head and the rest of the body.

An injury in the neck vertebrae can lead to an upper cervical misalignment. This often leads to nervous system dysfunction, irritation in the brain stem, and pressure on the nerves around the head.

A thorough examination will be conducted to determine if there is a misalignment when you first consult an upper cervical chiropractor. Digital x-ray and thermal imaging diagnostic tools will be used to determine if upper cervical care will improve your condition. If there is, the chiropractor will administer a chiropractic adjustment and other kinds of upper cervical care. This will correct the neck injury, restore nervous system function, prevent inflammation from reoccurring, and promote proper blood flow.

Many sufferers of migraines trust upper cervical chiropractic care because it addresses the problem’s cause and not the symptoms.
