man Experiencing whiplash after car crash

What Happens If You Leave Whiplash Untreated?

Whiplash is the sudden and forceful stretch of muscles, tendon, and other soft tissues in and around the neck region. Whiplashes can result in either a strain or tear of the soft tissues of the neck.

An estimated 3 million people suffer from whiplash in the US every year. Sufferers of whiplash experience neck pain, stiffness of the neck, pain when moving the neck, muscle spasm, swelling in the neck region, ringing noise in the head, headaches, pain in the arms, dizziness, fatigue, etc.

Causes of Whiplash

Sports and recreational rides can result in the sudden jerk of the neck in any direction. However, vehicle accidents account for the vast majority of whiplash cases.

How a Whiplash Affects You

Forceful movements to the neck cause injuries to ligaments, muscles, and bones around the neck

The neck carries the weight of the head and helps the head to move. When whiplash occurs, the muscles and vertebrae of the neck become sore and make head and neck movement painful. If left untreated, whiplash can lead to the following severe conditions:

Chronic Headaches and Migraines

Most times, the aches and pains associated with headaches and migraines come from misalignment of the spine.

Untreated whiplash-related injuries can affect the central nervous system.

Chronic Neck Pain

Chronic neck pain can result from complications caused by sudden trauma to the muscles, vertebrae, and ligaments of the neck.

If left untreated, the pain associated with whiplash can prevent you from carrying out your normal daily activities. Feelings of helplessness can affect the sufferer’s mood.

Constant Dizziness

Whiplash affects the system in the inner ears, making it difficult for sufferers to maintain proper body balance. If left untreated, the sufferer may experience vertigo.

Sleep requires a lot of head and neck-turning. Now imagine having to sleep in one position because of the pain involved in changing positions. Untreated whiplash can make sleep difficult.

Whiplash and Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care

The vertebrae and muscles of the upper cervical region are always susceptible to misalignment, especially when you’ve experienced whiplash, a fall, or a blow to the head.

Although injuries caused by whiplash are sometimes difficult to detect, an upper cervical chiropractor can diagnose a misalignment in the spine using digital x-ray and thermal imaging tools.

After the injury has been diagnosed, the specific chiropractor will administer chiropractic care to address the misalignment of the head and neck vertebrae and restore the nervous system function.

A growing body of evidence has shown that chiropractic care is effective in eliminating symptoms of whiplash. Don’t leave your whiplash untreated.
